Centuries of incremental adaptation and contextual or applied theology has given us sex equality in the Church of England, such that the highest office is now held by a woman. The visual contrast—a Christian woman in authority standing next to a fully-veiled Muslim woman in submission—is stark. What ‘harmony’ can there be with an Islamic tradition which treats a woman’s face as something to be hidden, and women as innately subordinate, being ‘deficient in intellect and religion’?
