A good start to the day #bufftip
This oak is only about 6 or 7 years old. Sprouted on St Dogmael’s Island and I moved it to the end of the midden. Already being enjoyed by cherry gall wasps, silk button gall wasps, and (rather alarmingly) #Phalerabucephala larvae!

My other 'favourite' in the #garden today is a #BuffTip. A #camouflage master, this #moth sits tight and mimics a broken birch tree twig. The brown edging around the head and buff centre is amazing, as is the mottled silver colour of the wings. https://t.co/18gRHs2nc0

On our Sunday walk, @ballisticowl heard something plopping out of an oak tree. At first, she thought it was a bird foraging but then saw dozens of caterpillars launching themselves onto the ground kamikaze-style. They wiggled off at speed searching for a place to pupate. #Bufftip
New #moth record for the garden, a #GoatMoth (left)! The caterpillars live inside tree trunks for 3-4yrs. Priority #species for #UKBiodiversityActionPlan. It's big, as you can see when alongside a #PineHawkMoth (top), a little #BuffTip (2nd right), and a #PrivetHawkmoth (right).
