#bugfactfriday = follow up on injections. This is the same pupa that was green in π pictures but now it's changed β© normal coloration. The green = food dye & in some species it metabolizes quickly - leaving only the injection scar green where the dye dried on the outside

This is my first try at injecting pupae and wow is it way easier than larvae! π Last time I got the desired phenotype, but still in the larval stages - hoping for a post-metamorphic phenotype this time πͺ²π€

#bugfactfriday Did you know bugs can get sexually transmitted infections? The π on top is covered in little yellow spikes - those are the reproductive structures of a Laboulbeniales sp fungus. This genus of fungus are unique (see next tweet β¬οΈ)
#bugfactfriday check out this Tipula sp. I found. This crane #fly makes it easy to see why flies are in the order #Diptera ("two wings" in latin) - over evolutionary time the hind wings have been modified into drumstick-like structures (halteres)

When it's a sawfly, ant, or bee! All are in the order Hymenoptera, which means membrane wing. Sawflies (like this one) are the most basal Hymenoptera and lack the 'wasp waist' that is more exaggerated in some of the ants and true wasps

some Thermobia domestica action today for #Bugfactfriday - These little pals are in the insect order Zygentoma, which are thought to have evolved in the Silurian period. They are one of the most ancient extant insects and even do indirect fertilization like scorpions
one more Leptoglossus #bugfactfriday before I move on to the next taxa. These photos are of a freshly molted adult who is still inflating wings and finishing "tanning" (sclerotization). When insects are in this stage they're called Teneral and are soft, vulnerable, and "pale"
