The Grande Finale #BuildingAZ, Z is for the Zeeland Bridge in the Netherlands, upon completion in 1965 was the longest bridge in Europe. 5km long with 48 spans of 95 metres, with a lifting section for shipping. I hope you've all enjoyed the tweets on Building over this month!

@Mikeashworth12 @ICELibrary Day 25 of @ICELibrary #BuildingAZ and Y = York is a fine choice. Some very striking stations on the mainline north from King’s Cross of course; Darlington and Newcastle Central have long made a good impression on me also :-)

Today in @ICELibrary #BuildingAZ it's Y for York. Appropriately for a Sunday morning, we're back to Christianity and York Minster. Apparently it took 250 years to build from 1220. Badly damaged by fire after lightning strike in 1984.

Only 2 days to go #BuildingAZ and we've reached the difficult letter. X is for xhibition buildings, some more temporary than others. You'll know the 1851 building but how about London 1862 building where @NHM_London and @sciencemuseum are now.
Today #BuildingAZ X is for....Xpansion joints (reaching, I know). Expansion joints allow for thermal movement such as expansion/contraction of metal when heated, also ground swells/shrinks with moisture. Expansion joints can also allow movement due to vibration & settlement.
Today's #BuildingAZ W is for waterproofing; water is very damaging to built environment, either by freeze/thaw expansion or washing chemicals & salts that cause corrosion. Today we're using a spray-applied polymer to waterproof our bridge deck - almost like I'd planned it 😉

#BuildingAZ V for Vibration; we can use vibration as a construction technique such as removing air from concrete or vibrating sheet piles into the ground, we also must control vibration e.g building tram lines on floating track slabs to reduce disturbance to dwellings.
