Reflections of a Convert
From Protestantism to Catholicism
When I was a child, we used the Ouija board, and I saw strange things in the house. I knew these things were not from God, so I often tried to picture myself in God's hands with fires of Angels all around protecting me. I rested in Big Hands and tried to sleep. But I was a nervous child, and there was much fear and anxiety in my little heart.
When I became a born-again "believer," I remember being told that the devil was known as the deceiver, the Father of Lies, and that we had to fight him with the "armor of God" and with "the Word of God."
This meant that to "gird" myself fully, I had to memorize scriptures that would come to mind quickly and easily. I was told that scripture was the only thing that would fend off the devil.
I was never comfortable with "fighting the devil," which seemed like a huge match. Of course, I was "covered with the blood of Jesus" according to that Protestant belief but still, I didn't much like this enormous responsibility. "What if I should mess up? Not know the right scriptures to quote?" I worried.
We, Protestants, were told to exercise the demons ourselves. We were told we had the right and we could do it. I was instructed to command: "Get thee behind me, Satan!" and to declare: "I am a child of God!"
When I was upstate NY near Cortland, it was rumored there were strongholds of Satanic area. That was pretty creepy to me.
I also remember in the Assembly of God Church I attended that there was a man who said he had converted from witchcraft and that every time "communion" was served at that church, he felt revolted.
I've never forgotten that "testimony."
BUT
Now, as a Catholic, I have found much relief and solace in knowing that I am NOT responsible for getting rid of Satan; that is the responsibility of the Catholic priests, specifically trained exorcists.
Catholics have sacramentals that keep the devil away. Holy water works wonders. I sprinkle our home daily every morning with it. The Blessed Mother keeps us safe under Her Mantle. She is the Queen of Heaven and Earth; She is also known, among other things, as the "Help of Christians, Refuge of Sinners, Tower of Ivory, Gate of Heaven, Ark of the Covenant, Morning Star, Health of the Sick…" Her list of titles is very long. Her very name frightens and gets rid of the devil. The brown scapular and the rosary frighten demons and incapacitate them. Look it up, there are many true stories about this.
And St. Joseph is also known as the Terror of Demons. Catholics have St. Michael the Archangel who we ask to battle.
As a Catholic, I do not do battle, as I did as a Protestant, and it's such a relief. I can call on our priests to battle for me; they are equipped.
Here's a true story about this:
One time, I was in my apartment, and a very bad person had left. My dogs refused to go into a room that that person was often in. Seeing this, I would not go into that room either. So, I called the priests and told them the story. "That's really bad!" They said, "We'll be right over!" They came, prayed and blessed the apartment. Immediately after this, the dogs trotted into that room without any protest.
I'm sure many Catholics have the same experiences. As a Catholic, I have to make sure I pray, do penance, and go to Confession. I also have to pray the Rosary as much as I can. These are some of the tools.
I know I have a Guardian Angel who is my protector and friend.
I've learned that when a Protestant is possessed, the Protestant must go to the Catholic Church for an exorcism because the Catholic Church is the only way to get relief.
