CONQUERED: New York City Council voted 38 to 9 for a bill that forces owners of about 2100 buildings to give city-certified nonprofits first priority to buy their own property for 90 days plus a right to match any later offer. ⠀ This is the socialism Mayor Zohran Mamdani promised when he called for the full de-commodification of housing in 2021 and now pledges to sign into law. ⠀ Owners who bought paid for and maintain the buildings lose the free right to sell on the open market as City Hall picks preferred buyers and can force them to wait or accept a matching bid. ⠀ Critics correctly note this restricts core property rights protected by the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments by letting government decide who gets first access to private real estate. ⠀ The measure targets distressed buildings with code violations yet still hands nonprofits an exclusive early window before any private buyer can compete. ⠀ You own it until the city decides otherwise under this new rule.
