This photo of these cows was taken in @rulindodistrict . The woman who owns them shared with me an incredible testimony. She told me:
“Even though no one wishes for misfortune or plans for it, every farmer must insure their activities. I decided to insure my cows so that if anything happened, I would be compensated.”
Recently, she faced such a challenge when one of her cows got sick and eventually died. But because it was insured, she was compensated with 1 million RWF.
What she appreciates most is that under the “Tekana Urishingiwe Muhinzi Mworozi” (Agriculture and Livestock Insurance Program), the government provides a 40% subsidy to make livestock insurance more affordable for farmers.

Success Story of Dancille Mukagashayija: Turning Passion into Prosperity..👇🏿
Dancille Mukagashayija, a resident of @gisozisector , @Gasabo_District of @CityofKigali, chose to return to her roots in Shyorongi Sector, @rulindodistrict of @RwandaNorth, to pursue pig farming.
She began modestly, with only one pregnant pig that gave birth to a few piglets. “It was a humble start, but I knew I wanted more,” Dancille recalls.
Her turning point came when she learned about the CDAT Project, which provides matching grants to farmers aiming to transition into professional farming. She applied, presented her project, and was approved. CDAT built her a modern pigsty and co-invested in her project.
With her contribution of 16 million RWF and CDAT’s support of 16 million RWF, Dancille was able to purchase five improved pigs, from @RwamaganaDistr . These pigs reproduced successfully, and today, she owns over 60 pigs, in addition to many she has already sold.
Her enterprise has expanded beyond pig farming, she has established a pork butchery, ensuring value addition and creating a local market for her products. She has also shared improved breeds with neighboring farmers and created job opportunities in her community.
Reflecting on her journey, Dancille proudly says:
“CDAT gave me confidence and the right foundation. Today, I no longer see farming as survival, but as a business that transforms lives.”
She encourages other women to step forward, seize opportunities, and invest in farming, reminding them that government and development partners are ready to support their ambitions.

Banker to Agripreneur: How CDAT Helped Anne Marie Build a Thriving Greenhouse Agribusiness in Rwamagana.
In Musha Sector, @RwamaganaDistr of @RwandaEast, Nyirakaziga Anne Marie once worked at Banque Populaire. Though she had a stable job, her passion for farming never faded. Every planting season, she would take leave from her banking duties to work alongside her farm laborers. Yet, despite her efforts, unpredictable weather made farming difficult and yields remained low.
“I loved farming even when I worked at the bank,” Anne Marie recalls. “But climate change was making it harder to succeed with traditional open-field farming.”
Determined to follow her passion, Anne Marie resigned from her banking career. At first, she focused on stabilizing a hotel business she had started in Musanze. During that time, she rented her farmland to others, but soon realized the arrangement brought little value.
In 2023, she heard about the CDAT Project’s Matching Grant, funded by the @WorldBank and implemented by @RwandaAgriBoard through the RAB-SPIU. She submitted a proposal to establish five greenhouses, and it was approved. CDAT provided 52 million RWF(50% of the Project), while she contributed the rest through personal resources and a bank loan.
With this support, Anne Marie constructed five modern greenhouses where she now grows tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, and French beans. The impact has been transformative. Yields are high even on a small plot, production continues year-round, and her crops are no longer at risk from climate variability.
To protect her investment, she enrolled in the “Tekana Urishingiwe Muhinzi Mworozi” insurance scheme, ensuring that her agribusiness is shielded from unexpected risks.
Today, Anne Marie is not only producing enough to feed her household but also supplying markets with high-quality produce. Her agribusiness has created six permanent jobs and continues to expand.
“Thanks to CDAT, I am practicing farming professionally. I left banking to follow my passion, and now agriculture is not only feeding my family but also employing others and building my future.”
Anne Marie’s journey demonstrates how strategic support, vision, and determination can transform a passion into a profitable agribusiness.
