In 2014, White Coat Waste’s then-board member met Violet in the lab and whispered in her ear, “I promise I’ll get you out.” She kept that promise, and Violet spent the next decade learning to love, trust, and live like every dog deserves. Pets are family. But when experimentation ends, cats and dogs (even the healthy ones) are usually killed. Most labs refuse to let families adopt survivors — even though taxpayers are forced to pay the bill for animal testing. Violet inspired White Coat Waste’s historic campaign to change this. Before Violet, no federal agencies had adoption policies for lab animals. White Coat Waste then won the first-ever adoption policies at the National Institutes of Health, Food & Drug Administration, and Depts. of War and Veterans Affairs. In 2025, Violet crossed the rainbow bridge. But her legacy is alive and well. Today, White Coat Waste is leading the campaign to pass VIOLET’S LAW in the Farm Bill — and help retire and release survivors across the U.S. federal government.
