Sometimes I find the contrived concision of short stories a bit cryptic, but from the unsettling opening of each story in this #CGSReads emerges a powerful sense of truth made vivid by sparkling dialogue & character. Loved his last novel; found this more challenging but worth it.

Catching up on some #CGSReads while a bit crook on this wet weekend. Reading books with the small people in your life makes everything better. Don’t forget to share your reading with your kids. It’s pretty special when they share back with you. This is a beautiful little one.

An uncomfortable yet intimate & generous #CGSReads for all of us who dwell within the cultures of institutions: what it is to be within & yet without; to belong & not; to wonder how much our professed inclusion is only really superficial; & how we may truly make it otherwise.

It might be a cold, wet, windy spring school holiday but it’s nice inside sharing #CGSReads on the excited recommendation of a 10yr old. This one’s an intriguing alternate world of lost children living in the rooftops of Paris. Smart, ironic, adventurous and beautifully tender.

I think maybe I need a break from #CGSReads on the state of the world… it feels I’ve read this before, or at least that the definition & self-evidently corrosive effect of contempt in contemporary politics & media didn’t need quite so much explaining. But it’s true & troubling.

Another #CGSReads from a busy term: a clear, powerful & accessible account of the history, complex currents, progress - & profound lack thereof - that bring us to this moment. An important read for all Australians, as we prepare for a historic opportunity to get it right.

The last #CGSReads on the state of the world for a while: too distressing. Nonetheless, this one’s a powerful account of the rise of authoritarian populism, the illiberal warping of conservatism, and an often personal condemnation of former friends turned wreckers of democracy.

On my list! And thanks for the share @DavidKButlerUoA. Currently reading Good Arguments by Bo Seo https://t.co/bSnLrF3TbK Perhaps 'listening' is a necessary theme? #cgsreads @nomad_penguin @Mathgarden

You’re Not Listening, by Kate Murphy.
Excellent book about what listening is and how it happens and doesn’t happen. Kept having to close it and process what it made me think and feel, which is a good sign.

A quick & engaging #CGSReads on the art of the interview: listening with readiness, curiosity & empathy. Important in so many contexts. Nice reminder too of how much I learned & enjoyed interviewing people in a brief career sojourn in radio years ago. Thanks to Jane for sharing.

A fascinating #CGSReads: bought for someone else, but didn’t make it that far! A beautiful homage to Orwell’s insistence on truth rooted firmly in the earth & human reality not in abstract ideology. Entwines botany, biography, history & politics, Orwell’s roses & Stalin’s lemons.

Perhaps not the light school holiday #CGSReads I needed, but a substantial fictionalised portrait of a mind (& family) grappling with the moral & cultural corruption inherent to the rise of political extremism. Disturbing to see early 20C so hauntingly reflected in our own times.

A #CGSReads I should have read long ago. A magnificent feat of writing, travel & memory. Bursting with arcane knowledge & propelled by the energy, curiosity & adventure of youth, yet shadowed by what came to Europe after. To be young & travel again! Sincerest thanks to Sandra H.

A monumental #CGSReads that charts the worldwide advance of science through the great movements of global history. Sets Eurocentric narrative in context & a powerful reminder of the world’s intellectual - as well as political and economic - interconnectedness before the internet.

An absolutely necessary #CGSReads for our times. A comprehensive account of the disinformation ecosystem and, most importantly, a powerful tool kit for understanding why it thrives, how to vaccinate against it, and both how to tackle it and how not to. Engaging and even hopeful.

This latest #CGSReads is a fascinating series of essays on Indigenous design ingenuity - and on the relationship between social structure, physical structure and knowledge of Country, past, current and future.

A superb #CGSReads that took me months amid the demands of the term but never disappointed on return. Enormous, yet intimate at once; the finest delineations of conscience & character to savour; not all to love, some even to loathe, but all so real & human. Remarkable literature.

A superb #CGSReads from earlier in the year that I should have shared a while ago. A lightness and ease of style that belies the subtlety of the craft and the beautiful humanity of its narrative personae. The kind of American literature I love and the America I miss.

A quick little #CGSReads on the triumph of politics over policy. That it barely even touches on education or health or so much else that matters only illustrates the paucity in our polity.

It’s been a long time but #CGSReads returns with a manual for a climate friendly energy future that everyone in need of a little hope should read.

An important & powerful #CGSReads inspired by the Uluru Statement to consider what might have been & could be if sovereignty & treaty were truly respected. Argues with passion & dignity that the soul & future of Australia depends on telling truth of its past - ‘lest we forget’.
