๐ #AfricanVoicesAtCOP30: Local leaders taking action
Fatimetou Abdel Malick, Council President of the Region of Nouakchott (Mauritania), is among the #CoMSSA Regional Mayors Forum members calling for climate finance that reaches the local level, where high-impact solutions are already being delivered.

๐ #AfricanVoicesAtCOP30: Local leaders taking action
African cities are on the frontline of #loss and #damage. #CoMSSA RMF chair, Emile-Gros-Raymond Nakombo, Mayor of Bangui (Central African Republic), is calling for the voices of sub-Saharan African local governments and the communities they serve to be heard by the Loss & Damage Fund board.

๐ #AfricanVoicesAtCOP30: Local leaders taking action
At the Africa Climate Summit 2, the #CoMSSA Regional Mayors Forum, 12 mayors from across sub-Saharan Africa, agreed on 3 political messages to carry forward through the Summit and towards COP30:
1๏ธโฃDevolved climate finance for local governments,
2๏ธโฃInstitutionalising multilevel governance for NDC delivery,
3๏ธโฃAddressing loss and damage through just and inclusive climate transitions.

#CoMSSA highlights at @ACS2ET ๐
At the opening plenary of #AfricaClimateSummit2, powerful provocations from heads of state and high-level speakers reminded us: the #climate crisis is not only an environmental issueโit is a profound development challenge. Multilateralism and inclusive governance are essential to building resilience.
Local leadership in action ๐
In side sessions hosted by the Climate Heritage Network, CoM SSA Regional Mayors Forum membersโthe Mayor of Walvis Bay (Namibia), Trevino Forbes and the Deputy Governor of Embu County (Kenya), Justus Mugoโemphasised the role of #heritage and traditional knowledge as pillars of #adaptation planning.
Mayor Forbes stressed the value of peer-to-peer learning through CoM SSA to co-create grounded, context-specific solutions.
๐ฑCulture as a catalyst for climate action
Dr Kate Leigh Strachan, CoM SSA Secretariat Coordinator, showcased how African cities are innovating at the intersection of culture and climate. In Quelimane (Mozambique) national commitments on mangrove protection have been translated into land-use policies that reduce flood risk while reinforcing cultural practices of stewardship.
Scaling local solutions for energy access
In a session co-hosted by ICLEI Africa, CoM SSA, and SESA Project Mayor Adamou Abdon of Garoua-Boulai shared how local governments can empower SMEs to scale solutions that boost access to clean #energy across African cities.

๐ Flipping the narrative: African cities are stepping up as climate leaders, and the data proves it.
Last year, #CoMSSA signatories were awarded a record number of badges by @Mayors4Climate . Each badge represents a milestone in the Sustainable #EnergyAccess and #ClimateAction Plan (SEACAP) journey, from assessing #emissions to setting targets to developing a plan of action.
For too long, #AfricanCities have been framed as lagging โ constrained by resources, capacity, or data. But the data shows the opposite: bold local leadership driving change in the face of crisis.
๐ Our #cities know: you canโt manage what you donโt measure. They are tracking progress, reporting transparently and taking action.
Every badge earned signals local governments taking charge of the climate crisis, with vision, commitment and data to back it up.
