@carolinepennock Piratilla, mas vale que te ocupes del EXTERMINIO de tribus en Norte America. Ahí sí, que tienes historias dónde inspirarte. Ingleses exterminadores. #CSRC2021 #500años
Ah yes. The civilising work of enslaving one million people (at least) in less than a century. Like I said at #CSRC2021. These stories of justification are pernicious and persistent. #500YearsOn
I said at #CSRC2021 #500YearsOn that whenever I mentioned the violence of colonialism on Twitter people yelled at me about the ‘truth’. And here’s just a tiny taste of my mentions after I suggested that the invasion of Mexico wasn’t a ‘liberation’. The justification never ends.
Closing with fab keynote from Camilla Townsend on representations and perception of women and a thought-provoking roundtable discussion. Thanks everyone for a welcoming, stimulating conference #CSRC2021 #500yearson
And just like that, #500yearson #CSRC2021 is done. There will be a recording to catch up on - with most, but not all - papers & keynotes. I’ll sort that once I’ve had a lie down 😬 Time to (properly) take some annual leave… watch this space & I’ll let you know when it’s ready 👍
Thank you to all of our presenters, chairs and attendees who have been with us over the past two days. Excluding tech difficulties it has been an enlightening and thought-provoking conference, we hope the discussions will continue!
Many thanks the CSRC Team #CSRC2021 #500yearson
We now wrap up #CSRC2021 with the Roundtable discussion. Convenor @amyfullermorgan has outlined the conference aims:
- to mark #500yearson but to not celebrate
- to be critical of the passively conquered stories
- to acknowledge on-going damage of conquerors actions.
Thoughts?
Enjoyed talking Vikings and America, plus being part of a panel with fascinating talks from @amyfullermorgan on colonial conversion and @DanielSalinas00 on tourist guidebooks of Mexico #CSRC2021 #500yearson
An eye-opening talk covering aspects such as the different treatment of women slaves/concubines by other natives and the Europeans; representation of these women in media and then their absence; range of emotions in sources; changing roles of these women. #CSRC2021 #500yearson
This is Spain's far-right party saying how proud they are of invading Mexico & 'liberating' millions of people. (Never mind that most of them them died...) These justifying stories are hugely pernicious. Glad to be challenging such Eurocentric narratives at #CSRC2021 #500yearson.
And now on Day Two of #CSRC2021 conference: Challenging Narratives of European Conquest and Commemoration, we have our keynote speaker Camilla Townsend with ‘Are We Ready to Talk about That Kind of Sex? Looking Back on Women in the Conquest’ #500yearson
Great questions coming in for the presenters around why resentment narratives for Aztec rule was popular; can we apply the analysis to guidebooks for all countries and eras; why are we so interested in Vikings being 'here' in indigenous lands? #CSRC2021 #500yearson
An enlightening examination of how Mexican travel guide narratives on the conquest change depending on the author; the intended audience and their background. Interesting that local voices are not included within the narration. Pause for thought: history as an asset? #CSRC2021
And last but not least in this final panel we have #CSRC2021's very own translator (which we're truly grateful for!)
@DanielSalinas00
with his paper ‘Tourist narratives and representations of the Conquest
in 20th century tourist guidebooks of Mexico’
#500yearson
A great insight into how religious motifs, such as the 10 plague but even siege atrocities, can be used by the Spanish to create a narrative that the natives needed help with conversion to Christianity and to be made aware of their own potential. #CSRC2021 #500yearson
So, I've been too overwhelmed to do live-tweeting of #CSRC2021 #500yearson, but you should all check out the hashtags for fascinating discussion which challenges Eurocentric narratives of conquest and colonialism. So many wonderful papers. Look out for the recorded versions!
Now we have our esteemed #CSRC2021 conference convenor and CSRC member @amyfullermorgan with the paper ‘Cruel to be Kind: Creating the “White Saviour” and “Grateful Convert” in
Colonial Narratives of the Conquest of Mexico’ #500yearson
Fascinating case studies including Mayan wall-paintings/etchings (including the discussion of facial hair) and coins to analyse to address the question of a Viking presence within the Americas and whether it has been over-stated. #500yearson #CSRC2021
