GEN Z’S GLOBAL RIOT MODE: ACTIVATED Gen Z is staring down a future where robots take their jobs, rent eats half their paycheck, and the lives their parents had look like a fantasy from another dimension. So they're burning it all down. Metaphorically in most places. Literally in Nepal and a few other hotspots. This isn't your standard college protest phase. Young people have toppled governments in Nepal, Madagascar, and Bulgaria this year. They're rattling administrations from Indonesia to Peru to Serbia. And they're doing it with a coordination that would make previous generations jealous, organizing on Discord while drawing inspiration from video games and anime. The Carnegie Protest Tracker logged 53 demonstrations of 10,000-plus people across 33 countries in 2025, the highest since they started counting in 2017. Bloomberg Economics crunched 22 million data points and found the pattern: high social media penetration plus young populations plus rising inequality equals governments in serious trouble. What's driving this? Start with the basics. 1 in 4 young people worldwide is neither employed nor in education. The jobs that do exist increasingly cluster in low-productivity service roles that barely cover rent, let alone build a future. Then add AI disruption threatening to automate away the entry-level positions that used to be stepping stones to decent careers. 24-year-old Nelly Razafimamonjy in Madagascar captured the generational divide perfectly: "At my age, my father already had a fixed public service job, while I keep going from one temporary contract to the next. I have no security, no social benefits." The symbols these protesters choose tell you everything. In Nepal, a 20-year-old student held up a poster of Master Chief from Halo, the character who refuses to obey orders he knows are wrong. Across multiple countries, demonstrators adopted the Jolly Roger pirate flag from the manga series One Piece. They're not just mad. They're declaring themselves outlaws in a system they see as fundamentally broken. And they're winning. Nepal's protesters didn't just complain, they stormed parliament, burned down government buildings and the 5-star Hilton, and forced the prime minister to resign. The army invited protest leaders to help choose the next leader. They held a straw poll on Discord. Even Nobel Prize-winning economist Daron Acemoglu sees the stakes: "Democracy seems to be in some sort of crisis around the world. Younger people are the spearhead of that crisis." The establishment response has been predictable hand-wringing about sustainability and realism. But when you're 23 and can't afford to move out of your parents' house while watching corrupt officials live like kings, radical starts sounding pretty reasonable. Source: Bloomberg
