🦎 𝐓𝐇𝐄 "𝐆𝐘𝐌 𝐁𝐑𝐎" 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐓𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃 🦎
You are looking at the #Calotes Lizard (often called the Green Forest Lizard). It looks like a cartoon, but it is an evolutionary machine.
Here are 𝟕 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 about the lizard that does push-ups for a living:
𝟏. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫" 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡 🧛♂️ Locals often call this lizard the "𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐫." This is a terrifying (but false) nickname. During breeding season, the male's head and throat turn a violent 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐝. It looks like it just finished a gruesome meal, but it is actually a harmless mating display to attract females.
𝟐. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐨 "𝐏𝐮𝐬𝐡-𝐔𝐩𝐬" 💪 If you watch them long enough, they will start doing rapid push-ups on a branch. This is not exercise; it is communication. The "Push-Up" is a dominance signal. It tells other males: "Look how strong and fit I am. Stay away from my tree." It is a biological flex.
𝟑. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐨𝐧 🎨 People constantly mistake them for Chameleons because they can change color. However, they are 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐝𝐬. While a Chameleon changes color for camouflage, the Calotes changes color primarily based on emotional state (stress, aggression, or arousal). They are living mood rings.
𝟒. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐄𝐲𝐞" 👁️ Look closely at the top of its head. Like many ancient #reptiles, they possess a 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐲𝐞 (a photosensory organ). It cannot "see" images, but it senses light and shadows. It acts as a radar to detect predatory birds attacking from above, even when the lizard is sleeping.
𝟓. 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐓𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 🍽️ They look cute, but they are savage predators. They are opportunistic hunters that will eat almost anything that fits in their mouth—including insects, smaller lizards, and sometimes 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠. Nature does not have a "family discount."
𝟔. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐫𝐨 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐩 🧗 Notice how it sits on the branch. Their toes are exceptionally long and equipped with sharp, recurved claws. This allows them to run vertically up trees and sleep upside down in high winds without falling. They are biologically engineered for gravity defiance.
𝟕. 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐄𝐲𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 🔭 While not as extreme as a true Chameleon, they have excellent vision. They can spot a small insect moving from 𝟏𝟎 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 away. They rely on vision (not smell) to hunt, making them one of the most accurate snipers in the garden.
It isn't a Chameleon. It isn't a Bloodsucker. It is a masterpiece of adaptation.
