We found that #Calothrix (Nostocales) was the most common filamentous #cyanobacteria where parrotfish bit. Importantly this calcifying cyanobacteria was not detected in the 16S SSU rRNA🧬sample for #Scarus_globiceps - despite Calothrix being observed in microscopy on all 20 bite cores for this species of #parrotfish.

#PhycologyFriday After 5yrs microscopy 🔬 quantifying filamentous #cyanobacteria on our #coral_reef 🦜🐟#parrotfish bite cores, I 💕#Calothrix & 💕#Mastigocoleus (Nostocales) but after my DNA🧬 work I now have to split these affections between 2 more genera #Kyrtuthrix #Nunduva

🎉 PhD microscopy 🔬 can resume as Auckland eased 😷 restrictions. I have taken 10s of thousands of microscope photos 📸 of the #coral_reef_Cyanobacteria where parrotfish bite. I measure every Cyano filament to create a coral reef density value. Here’s #Calothrix #Nostocales

Did you know some common heterocystous #coral_reef_cyanobacteria are underrepresented in sequencing due to their thick extracellular polysaccharide sheaths?? With Cyanobacteria it is essential to combine microscopy with sequencing #calothrix #dichothrix

#Lobophora is a photogenic prostrate coral reef algae. We found it growing on #CCA and the cyanobacteria #Calothrix living epiphytically on it. #coralreef_trophodynamics #phycologyFriday

Why do some #parrotfish munch on recently #bleached_coral? To find the answer we had to #bring_the_reef_to_the_microscope. We took reef samples where the parrotfish had just bitten. Microscopy revealed that filamentous #cyanobacteria were the dominant biota. Species 1 #Calothrix.
