As part of @dfat 's #CanberraFellowshipsProgram, we were delighted to host a delegation driving Sri Lanka’s digitisation efforts, including Deputy Minister for Digital Economy the Hon. (Eng) Eranga Weeraratne and Special Advisor to the President Dr Hans Wijayasuriya. It was a busy week for the fellows with technical meetings with Australian agencies in Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney!
Some highlights included:
📍 Meetings with the Hon Dr Andrew Charlton MP, Australia’s Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy; the Hon Tim Watts MP, Australia’s Special Envoy for Indian Ocean Affairs; and the Hon Cassandra Fernando MP, Australia’s first Federal MP of Sri Lankan origin
📍Discussions with DFAT's Deputy Secretary Michelle Chan and learning about Australia’s digital transformation experience from senior officials at the Digital Transformation Agency, Department of Finance, Australian Tax Office, Department of Social Services, Australian Digital Health Agency, as well as Victorian State Government agencies
📍Visiting the Macquarie Data Centre and hearing from digital industry leaders about their experience as well as opportunities to invest in Sri Lanka through the Digital Business Investor Forums in Melbourne and Sydney
📍A networking lunch with business leaders and academia hosted by Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to Australia, Her Excellency Yasoja Gunasekara
📍Meeting with Australian Information Commissioner, Privacy Commissioner, and Freedom of Information Commissioner
The meetings were a great opportunity for the fellows to deepen their understanding of Australia’s digital journey, including technical, policy/regulatory, and social issues. We look forward to continuing to support this top priority of the Sri Lankan government.
