Cannae’de Hannibal, kendisinden daha büyük bir Roma ordusuyla karşılaştı ve Roma’nın sayısal üstünlüğünü onu tuzağa düşüren bir zayıflığa dönüştürdü.

I missed this anniversary the other day.
One of the greatest military victories in all of #history at #Cannae.
Yet, never forget- #Hannibal ultimately lost to #Rome & later, Carthage would be "sown with salt," or so says later mythology. But Carthage definitely was removed as a great power.
Tactical victories, no matter how spectacular do not inherently lead to strategic victory. For that, you need... A strategy that brings means & ends into balance.
There is a broader lesson here, even for us in America...
Today 216BC Second Punic War: Battle of Cannae - Carthaginian army lead by Hannibal defeats numerically superior Roman army under command consuls Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Gaius Terentius Varro
2 Aug 216 BC: #Hannibal leads the #Carthaginian army and defeats a larger Roman #army at the Battle of #Cannae in what is considered one of the greatest tactical victories in history. #HistoryMatters #History #OTD #ad https://t.co/JYaRB7wRST
#Cannae was a disaster for #Rome & the apotheosis of brilliance for #Hannibal.
Its name has motivated military commanders for over two thousand years.
But don't forget #Carthage ultimately lost the #PunicWars to Rome & its fields sewn with salt. Hannibal himself committed suicide to avoid eventual capture by a subsequent Roman army.
Military victory alone does not mean ultimate victory without a strategy that connects the win on the battlefield to a sustainable political victory.
This is a critical lesson from #history.
Before battle of Cannae both consuls Paullus and Varro had an argument as to fight Hannibal.
Paullus insisted that they shouldn’t rush a battle because commanders before had came right into Hannibal’s trap. But because Varro needed to make a name for himself and the army was eager to fight, Romans drew in lines and prepared to attack.
80’000 Romans stood against only 40’000 Carthaginians. Hannibal lured Romans and prepared his trap.

Here was born #Carthage atop Byrsa Hill: Resilient. Majestic. Alive with its foundations dominating Roman villas and today's Tunis, #Tunisia, through the lens of its ambassador Dorsaf Seboui

"So the Carthaginian is leaving his ambushes to fight us straight up," Varro said in a voice of quiet satisfaction. "Splendid."

@secretsqrl123 Doesn't that look an awful lot like a certain other battle, where the center retreated, leaving the flanks exposed? #cannae
#Cannae, one of history's bloodiest and most fateful battles. My take: https://t.co/Z2oFzhvFT1
Unlike the previous battles, such as Trebia or Trasimene, where Hannibal made use of the nearby river/lake, the battlefield of #Cannae was a flat open plain. This was excellent terrain for heavy infantry, like the Roman legion.
Hannibal, however, had an advantage in cavalry. /7

This day in bad drawings, 216 BC: Hannibal deals Rome one of its worst defeats ever at the Battle of Cannae #ThisDayInHistory #history #otd #romanempire #Hannibal #Cannae #Rome #comic #historicalhumor
#Cannae
It was greatest victory ever by any general . Roman army was more than twice as large as hannibals army . Hannibal army was thinly spread and Roman's wanted to use their numbers as a battering RAM to wipe Hannibal in one go and guess what Hannibal did?

Hannibal Barca creates a masterpiece at Cannae, destroying the largest army assembled by Rome on 2 August 216 BCE.
The Battle of Cannae resulted in 50-70,000 Roman dead & many Italian cities joined Hannibal against Rome after the battle.
Today ! It's time to head back to my research on the best battle ever !

This is my map of the #Cannae battle
Isn't it amazing?
Ancient military history is just everything to me. History is so exciting.
#PugliaconGozarte2023 Acabamos de pasar por #CANNAE DELLA BATTAGLIA, donde #Aníbal derrotó a los romanos en 216 a.C. Podría haber cambiado la historia de la Humanidad.
