#CaravanCollection | On 15 May, during an open-court hearing, the chief justice of India, Surya Kant, described critics who questioned the system as “parasites” and compared unemployed young people entering media, activism and public-interest work to “cockroaches.” The remarks came less than a year after Kant’s elevation to the country’s highest judicial office. In 2019, when he was elevated to the Supreme Court, The Caravan had reported on allegations of corruption and tax evasion that had followed his judicial career for years.
Over the past decade, The Caravan has reported on several chief justices of India and the legal establishment surrounding them who have shaped the relationship between the judiciary and the executive. This Caravan Collection #43 brings together a selection of those profiles, investigations and reported essays from our archives.

#CaravanCollection | Movement, in the modern South Asian city, is rarely just about getting from one place to another. It is a language through which power is exercised and contested—deciding who may pass with ease, who must wait, and who is rendered invisible altogether. The expansion of metros, the persistence of railways, the promise of cycling infrastructure and the dominance of the automobile each carry their own claims of progress. Yet, beneath these narratives lie quieter, more complicated truths: of labour made expendable, of spaces unevenly shared, of aspirations shaped as much by exclusion as by access.
In this issue of The Caravan Collection, we bring together stories that examine how systems of transport reorder cities—reshaping their geographies, their hierarchies and the lives that move within them.

#CaravanCollection | Members of Hindutva organisations in the United States have said that they want to set up a lobbying operation to influence American policies vis-a-vis India, like the powerful Israel lobby.
Since Israel launched a brutal air and ground assault on Palestinians in the besieged Gaza enclave last October, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, as the Israel lobby is formally known, has been in the thick of action influencing and marshalling US political, diplomatic and material support in favour of Israel’s war even though, surveys show, the majority of the American public disapprove of the Israeli aggression. The Hindutva groups aim to exert similar influence in the corridors of power in Washington. And they have gotten down to work.
In an ongoing series, Abhay Regi, an editorial fellow at The Caravan, traces the network of Indian-Americans, mostly aligned with the ruling BJP and the wider Sangh Parivar back in India, seeking to influence US political elites. The extent of their lobbying is revealed in publicly available records filed under the Foreign Agents Registration Act of 1938, which requires representatives of foreign interests in the US to periodically disclose their activities.
This vast network includes groups like the Overseas Friends of BJP which are pushing to secure American support for the Narendra Modi government, allay concerns over its treatment of religious minorities, and aid the flow of international donations to the BJP and other RSS affiliates.
The first of Regi’s three-part series is now online. Read:

The Caravan has reported on the activities of Hindu nationalists in America previously as well. One of them is Shalabh ‘Shalli’ Kumar, a prominent businessman dubbed “Trump’s favourite Hindu” during the newly elected president’s first term from 2016 to 2020.
In his first term as president, Donald Trump’s perceived camaraderie with Modi made headlines in national and international media. As he prepares for a second term in a changed global geopolitical scenario, it remains to be seen how the US deals with the Modi government and views its treatment of ethnic and religious minorities in particular – and what role overseas Hindu nationalist groups play in this new dynamic.

#CaravanCollection | Earlier this month, the Asian News International filed a defamation case against Wikipedia.
The online encyclopedia’s page on ANI mentions accusations of it being a propaganda tool for the BJP government. This description hardly seems unwarranted, as our cover story on ANI from 2019 shows. But ANI is only a part of a larger media ecosystem geared to serve the needs of the Modi government. It’s the only kind of media that the ruling party wishes to see in the country.

#CaravanCollection | In the last few months, Jammu and Kashmir has seen several attacks by militants, including one which left nine pilgrims dead.
Since its inception, The Caravan has produced nuanced reportage and essays on the complex politics, militancy and state of civil liberties in Kashmir. On 12 February, the information and broadcasting ministry ordered us to pull down from our website and social media platforms a story headlined “Screams from the Army Post” on the Indian Army’s torture and murder of civilians in the Pir Panjal region last December.
🧵[1/10] As we challenge that order, read this selection from our archives on the state of affairs in Kashmir:

#CaravanCollection | In the last decade, several reports have documented how the Narendra Modi government’s policies have benefited two industrialists, Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani. The opposition has time and again highlighted these allegations. But on 8 May, Modi insinuated that it was Rahul Gandhi and the Congress that had struck a deal of some sort with Ambani and Adani.
Modi, of course, did not provide any evidence to back up his allegation.
The Caravan, though, has published several stories over the past decade, backed by rigorous reporting and evidence, about his government’s engagement with various conglomerates, especially those run by Ambani and Adani.
