Vija #Celmins (1935) is a Latvian artist that uses charcoal, graphite, & paint to create photo-realist paintings of seascapes, spiderwebs, starfields, & rocks. She also draws animals & recreates book covers in graphite in precise detail as well as oversized objects. #WomenArtists
Then she enters the world of spiderwebs. Another 100 or so images of various types of webbing. Then, this PERFECT recreation in graphite of “The Origin Of The Species”. Almost as if it’s a litho of the actual cover of #Darwins seminal work.
More #Celmins. The water and space scenes are block print. Which is mind blowing. There were 100’s upon 100’s of various seas, rough to placid, white caps to smooth and reflective. The “moon surface” as I will refer to them, same. Textures from excessively rough, (4) almost flat
Vija #Celmins was the show in March 2019- I was busy with museums that year. Lucky, as I didn’t get a single visit in 2020!! Vija’s work is delicate, tedious, amazing. I don’t have titles for everything. I was just entranced! •Envelope• •Space Heater• •Lamp• •Hot Plate•
Her ability to recreate still-life is just phenomenal. There is no way to show the totality of this exhibit. There were 100’s of drawings. These were her sculptural elements. Mostly representations of her tools. Comb is random. #Celmins
Some very cobbled, others like pebbles in sand. She explores the entire gamut of textures. Then she does space, and there were hundreds of various images of stars on black backgrounds. Galaxies to comets. #Celmins
