Happy National #FlagDay! The #CanadianFlag was raised for the first time above the #PeaceTower 59 years ago today. Amid the largest rehabilitation project in its history, the maple leaf still flies proudly above the #CentreBlock and other #ParliamentHill buildings.
On the night of February 3, 1916, a large fire destroyed the #CentreBlock of the Parliament buildings. In the weeks following the fire, it was decided the new building would be mainly stone rather than wood. #ParliamentHill

Architect #JohnAPearson created a modern design for #CentreBlock to fit into the neo-Gothic aesthetic on Parliament Hill. This 1934 drawing of the #PeaceTower was part of his diploma work for the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, submitted in 1936.
Five years ago, before closing the Main Library for the rehabilitation of #CentreBlock, we dispersed our Collection across our branches. Some items, like this portrait bust of Princess Alexandra, were preserved securely in place.
