Securing rollups.
Since our discovery of the ZK soundness bug on @zkSync Era on September 15th, nearly $2B has passed through the bridge.
This critical bug was quickly patched by zkSync, despite being exploitable only if an attacker (1) compromised zkSync Era's backend and (2) remained undetected for 21 hours after the attack — conditions that only @the_matter_labs can meet thanks to their extensive security layers.
However, we must acknowledge that the outcome could have been drastically different if this vulnerability had fallen into the hands of a malicious hacker or existed within a rollup with less security measures.
As @VitalikButerin foresaw and proposed in "Proposed milestones for rollups taking off training wheels," there is a growing demand for a milestone-based framework.
By introducing transparent criteria and degrees of training wheel stages, more rollup projects are gradually enabling users to easily assess the extent to which a specific rollup relies on "trust in a particular group of humans" vs. "trust in the code."
While projects demonstrate proactive and ongoing commitment, it becomes the mission of security researchers to ensure the safety of the process until the training wheels are completely and securely removed.
Security researchers are standing at the front line of these new frontiers.
With ZK development and implementations rapidly evolving and diversifying across various paths and structures, it is our responsibility to explore this new realm, exchange insights, and collaborate with projects aiming to enhance the trust model and support the process of removing the training wheels.
