1. Empresses In The Palace (2011)
Also called Legend of Zhen Huan, it is set in Qing Dynasty and follows Zhen Huan, a young woman who is forced to participate in the selection for the Imperial Harem. Due to her resemblance to the late empress, she is chosen and enters the palace. From this point on, she falls in love with the emperor and has to survive the many schemes of other consorts who see her as a threat.
2. Palace of Desire (2000)
Set in Tang Dynasty, it tells the story of Princess Taiping, the daughter of Wu Zeitian, the only female emperor in Chinese history. Princess Taiping falls in love three times. One to a man who doesn't love her; another, to a man who betrays her and a third, to a man who almost destroys her. Every time she is faced with the reality of what it means to have too much or too little power to be able to love freely.
3. War and Beauty (2004)
Set in Qing Dynasty, the drama follows the many concubines of Emperor Jiaqing, mainly Empress Xiaoherui, Imperial Consort Yu, Noble Lady On and Noble Lady Wah. The story approaches the intrigues amongst them moved by their desire to gain the emperor's favor, to conquer power in the harem and to better their own life, as well as their family's lives.
4. The Legend of Mi Yue (2015)
Set in the Warring States period, it tells the story of Princess Mi Yue, who grows up seeing her mother fall to the schemes of the Queen of Chu. Later in her life, she is married to the King of Qin and gains her husband's favor. Mi Yue becomes target to many conspiracies in the palace, but she still thrives and, eventually, becomes the first stateswoman and Queen Dowager in Chinese history.
5. Story of Yanxi Palace (2018)
Set in Qing Dynasty, it tells the story of Wei Yingluo, a young woman who enters the palace as a seamstress to investigate her sister's death. She catches the attention of Empress Fuca, who teaches her how to read and write. The two become each other's right-hand person, with Fuca being her benefactor and Wei Yingluo helping Fuca to survive the harem's intrigues.
6. Ruyis Royal Love In The Palace (2018)
Set in Qing Dynasty, it tells the story of how Ula-Nara Qingying had become Empress Nara and was, then, erased from history by her own husband, Emperor Qianlong, bringing a new perspective about her story. Originally called Ula-Nara Qingying, she was supposed to be the primary consort, but was replaced by Fuca Langhua. When Hongli ascends to the throne, he became Qianlong Emperor, Fuca Langhua became Empress Fuca and Qingying became Consort Xian. From this point on, she had to face the empress' and the other consort's rivalry while still deeply loving the emperor.
Although int'l fans like today's style of C-dramas, the old-school ones are poetry in motion like Palace of Desire/大明宫词.
