This October, Kenya once again took to the global stage for the 5th FIDE Intercontinental Online Chess Championship for Prisoners, held from October 14th to 16th, 2025, under the #ChessForFreedom initiative by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
The event brought together 135 teams from 57 countries, each proving that even behind bars, the human mind remains boundless. Kenya was proudly represented in two categories:
• Youth Category (Group 3) – Kamiti Youth Corrective Training Centre (YCTC)
• Women’s Category (Group 3) – Kamae Borstal Institution for Girls
Led by CA David Lekopian and coaches Juliet and Mark, with volunteer trainers and national champions Chanel McKenzie and Elsie Muturi joining the effort, the Kenyan teams displayed remarkable resilience, discipline, and unwavering commitment throughout the tournament.
The Youth Group 3 featured fierce competition from Kenya, Ghana, Malawi, and Georgia. The Kenyan boys opened strong with a 3–1 victory over Georgia, setting an inspiring tone for the championship. However, subsequent rounds against the highly experienced Ghana and Malawi teams proved challenging, with Kenya finishing third overall.
Notable performances included impressive individual displays of focus and composure from the players, evidence of the growing potential within Kenya’s correctional chess program.
In the Women’s Category, the Kamae Borstal Institution for Girls went head-to-head with formidable opponents from Georgia, Ukraine, Latvia, Romania, and Slovenia. Despite the challenging lineup, the team demonstrated exceptional grit and focus, with Rukia Kasim earning 3 points and Grace Ntinyari adding 1.5 points to the tally. Their participation marked a powerful step for young women in correctional facilities who are breaking barriers and rewriting narratives through chess.
While the teams did not secure podium finishes this time, their participation reflected Kenya’s unwavering belief in chess as a pathway to rehabilitation, education, and empowerment.
This year’s championship unfolded against the backdrop of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Dr. Salome Beacco, Principal Secretary for Correctional Services, and Chess Kenya. The agreement aims to expand access to chess education across Kenya’s correctional facilities, introducing structured training programs, mentorship opportunities, and ongoing learning resources throughout the year.
As Phylis Ngigi, Global Outreach Director at The Gift of Chess, noted, “While the effort and participation were truly commendable, greater focus is needed to ensure our teams have consistent access to training, mentorship, and online chess platforms. Regular exposure to virtual tournaments and forums remains a challenge that must be addressed ahead of future events.”
She issued a call to action to key stakeholders, particularly Safaricom and Airtel, to partner in strengthening digital infrastructure within correctional facilities.
“Establishing reliable fibre connectivity and creating Digital Hubs in prisons will be transformative,” she emphasized.
According to Philis, building capacity, digital access, and discipline in preparation will be crucial to enhancing performance in upcoming championships and to sustaining the momentum of transformation through chess.
