Given that we know that many young people already take on the challenges of adulthood, including home-making & bread-winning, we end with this question: How do we conceive of youths' capacity to marry in a way that takes their life circumstances into account? #ChildMarriagesSA
The presence of consent in the self-initiated marriage is not recognized under the law. In the case of criminal prosecution, it is thus found, the boys who are also adolescents are often criminalized. #FIREspeak #childmarriage
Although self-initiated marriages make up a significant percentage of #ChildMarriagesSA, they are often discounted. A number of factors contribute to this including the marginalisation of adolescent sexuality and societal unwillingness to recognise the agency of young people.
There are two ways to classify #ChildMarriagesSA that have been productive for FIRE's research. One is self-initiated marriages whereby each spouse enters into the partnership by choice (e.g. love marriages), and another is forced marriages in which both parties lack agency.

@IWRAW_AP Cohabitation is driven by complex mix of social stigma around sexual relationships, protecting the honour/dignity of girls. Parents and local govt officials will actively encourage this as a strategy to address issue of sexual relationships and early pregnancy.

COVID-19 has measurably disrupted the lives of millions as the shutdowns of schools & places of work have limited opportunities for growth. The ongoing uncertainty caused by the pandemic has led many to seize stability in any form including underage marriage. #ChildMarriagesSA
Single women face stigma rooted in fears about their sexual expression & antiquated ideals of a woman's role in the home. As girls are also often denied agency in choosing their partners, underage marriage gives the family greater control over this decision. #ChildMarriagesSA
In Sri Lanka, patterns of early marriage shaped by economic hardship repeat over generations as people's living circumstances remain unchanged. Further study of how the context of poverty influences #ChildMarriagesSA could be crucial to developing new pathways for young girls.
Our research shows many factors influence the prevalence of #ChildMarriagesSA. While some are more strongly felt than others, it is a complex mix of myriad structural issues including financial precarity & barriers to learning that causes people to turn to underage marriage.
