Clogging of blood vessels occurs mainly by the accumulation of fatty plaques in the arteries (atherosclerosis) or by the formation of clots in the veins (thrombosis).
Difference Between Arteries and Veins:
● Arteries (Atherosclerosis): They carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the body. Clogging occurs due to the accumulation of cholesterol, calcium and fat, which can cause heart attack or stroke.
● Veins (thrombosis): They bring blood back to the heart. The blockage occurs due to blood clots, causing swelling and severe pain, with the risk of pulmonary embolism.
In the arteries of the heart:
● Chest pain (angina) or shortness of breath.
In the legs (arterial obstruction):
● Pain when walking that improves when resting (intermittent claudication).
● In the veins (thrombosis):
Sudden swelling in just one of the legs, intense pain, redness and heat in the area.
