It’s time to relax, because #CollectionsCorner this week is all about bath time! This bronze sluice gate frame was discovered in the north-east corner of the Great Bath, preserved in situ for 2000 years before it was removed in the Victorian period.

This lead pig is the star of today’s #CollectionsCorner! Discovered in 1809, it bears the name of the Emperor Hadrian and weighs 88kg! It likely came from the Roman lead mines in the Mendips, to be melted down to make pipes and linings in the baths throughout the site.

This week in out #CollectionsCorner is this paw-some Roman brick! While it was laid out to dry before firing, a dog walked over the surface and left its seal of approval to be preserved for 2000 years. The brick itself may have been used in a stack as part of a hypocaust.

This funerary sculpture of a woman’s head was discovered in the Walcot area of Bath, where the main cemetery of Aquae Sulis lay along the Fosse Way, a Roman road that ran all the way from Exeter to Lincoln.

This week in our #CollectionsCorner are these magnificent gemstones, discovered in 1885 in the main drain leading from the spring. There are 34 gemstones in total. Swipe through for a bust of a maenad, a discobolus, a leaping lion, and a countryside scene of three cattle.

This week’s #CollectionsCorner brings you these beautiful floor tiles from Keynsham Abbey. The Abbey was founded around 1167 and operated until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. Today its remains can be seen in Memorial Park in Keynsham. #CulturalHeritage

It is time for a #CollectionsCorner favourite! The design on the side of this Roman patera or pan was originally filled with brightly coloured enamel, depicting Hadrian’s Wall as a crenelated line with blocky towers or forts.

Something very special for our #CollectionsCorner - the Monkswood Hoard! This Bronze Age metalwork was buried over 3000 years ago, possibly stock hidden by a travelling bronze smith. It was discovered in St Catherine in 1894. It includes ornaments, weapons and tools.

Taking inspiration from The Traitors for today’s #CollectionsCorner, we spotlight Roman cloaks. Cloaks were popular in Roman Bath, with two curse tablets complaining of stolen Caracallas - the hooded cloak made in Britain which were exported across the Roman Empire.

This lovely poem was written by a grateful visitor to the Spa Treatment Centre in 1911 in one of the Visitor Books in the collection. We hope you can wind down this weekend with a relaxing hot bath, it comes highly recommended. #CollectionsCorner

Our final 2024 #CollectionsCorner brings us back to winter of 1930 when Hillary House was covered by a beautiful layer of snow! You may notice there was no fence along Yonge Street at this time. Let us know which Collections Corner was your favourite this year!

#CollectionsCorner This photo shows the Aurora Lawn Tennis Club on the Hillary House tennis courts in 1911. While the club played on the lawn adjacent to Trinity Anglican Church, they also regularly met at Hillary House, contributing to RM Hillary's title of Honourary President.

#CollectionsCorner This fan is from the Master Bedroom & includes the names of several Hillary's, relatives, and friends from 1924. Names includes Edith, Dot, Bea, and Katheryn Hillary alongside Mrs. JM Willis, Sue Way, and Victoria and Nicholas Mussen. What a lovely keepsake!

#CollectionsCorner Many of the Hillary's were artists; visual, performing, and musical. This painting kit belonged to Nora Hillary and showcases her love for sketching, charcoal drawing, and painting.
