🍂An autumn update from our #colourwatch blog.. Autumn's ever-shifting pattern of colour is charging full steam ahead. No two days are the same as our many species begin to burst into colour. The Acers are still a highlight, dotted dramatically around the lakes creating fiery reflections, as are the Spindle tree, or Euonymus (see the next two tabs along on the blog), but this week we look further afield as Gardener Liv picks one of her favourite autumn trees, the Quercus rubra. Quercus rubra - Gardener Liv Down a fresh path, amidst meadows glistening with dew, the first murmurs of autumn begin to call. Like the singed edges of a once bright page, the leaves of the red oak, Quercus rubra, are tinged with red, their luminous edges announcing the gentle start of the season. Also known as the Northern Red Oak, Quercus rubra finds its roots in the rich soils of North America. It thrives across New York and New England, weaving through the landscapes of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. In autumn, its vivid red leaves brighten these regions renowned for their fall colour, illuminating the forests where it stands tall. While somewhat similar in shape to the soft, frilled leaves of our native English Oak, Quercus robur, the Red Oak is distinguishable by its larger leaves and sharper lobes. Several beautiful examples of Quercus rubra grow at Sheffield Park and Garden. As visitors wander left from the Visitor Reception toward the first lake, they will find two or three lining the main path, with many more scattered throughout the collection. Other sights to look out for around the garden Sweet chestnuts Glance up as you pass the gnarled, veteran sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) trees and you will be greeted by a classic autumn sight - prickly sweet chestnut cases. The nuts within are edible to humans - they were particularly loved by the Romans - and can be roasted or used for other recipes. Squirrels enjoy them too! Fungi Fungi is abundant right now and the iconic fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) is particularly striking with its white-spotted, scarlet-red appearance. It can be easily found at the base of different conifer species, such as pine and fir, with which it forms symbiotic relationships. Reds and golds amongst the greens The march towards autumn is a fascinating display to watch. Every day the vibrant flecks of colour multiply, and soon they will merge into rich pools of autumnal shades. This fascinating process can be seen in our famous Nyssa sylvatica 'Sheffield Park' trees which are starting to turn. The Carya cordiformis (Bitternut hickory) by reception is another tree to watch. We call it our autumn indicator tree - when it turns golden we can say that autumn is well and truly here.
