You know you’ve got the #herpetology bug when you get a bit emotional at the sight of a pond full of breeding #CommonToads!
#LondonBlueChain trainee Rose pulled herself together and got her camera out, then invited everyone she knew in the area to get down and check it out.

During the winter months, #CommonToads do not fully hibernate but brumate like other #amphibians.
They spend most of their time burrowed in mud or compost to conserve energy, and like the common frog, will emerge in milder spells to forage.

#DYK #CommonToads can ‘breathe’ through their skin as well as through their lungs?
This allows them to stay underwater and provides safety when they become part of a #matingball during breeding season.

Exciting news! whilst undertaking #amphibian survey training workshops at restored ponds by #DiscoveringDewponds, #greatcrestednewts were observed at 5 ponds, #smoothnewts observed at 6 & #palmatenewts at 2.
#CommonToads have also spawned at 2 of the ponds!

Creativity is a fantastic way to get children and young people engaging with nature.
Our #LondonBlueChain team were blown away by the year 4s at @RathfernPS who designed these #GreatCrestedNewts and #CommonToads from clay in just 10 minutes!

The start of summer means the start of reptile surveying 🌞 Sunday morning was a success with 6 #GrassSnake and 3 #CommonToads found under refugia. If you’re interested in becoming a member and joining us on upcoming surveys, take a look at our website https://t.co/yRFKiu6GsE
#DYK #CommonToads only have webbing on their hind feet?
This toad, spotted on #HamptonNR, is proudly showing off the lack of webbing on its front foot.

Look at these wonderful #CommonToads braving the waves of #LochGarten in #Scotland.
The water here looks reddish-orange due to the tannins produced by the trees of the surrounding native #Caledonian pinewood.

Unlike our #CommonToads, who are so determined to return to their ancestral ponds to breed that they sometimes need help crossing roads, #CommonFrogs are far less fussy!
They sometimes even lay their spawn in puddles and other temporary bodies of water.

It's fascinating to monitor @GreatFen #restoration. In this case, the transformation of an excavated hole in the ground into a thriving #pond. #CommonToads colonised their new breeding site quickly; so you can expect more of this, thanks to #PeatlandProgress and @HeritageFundUK.

#CommonToads and their spawn city! 🐸 I had fun watching the frenzy from a different perspective back in peak migration time. Hopefully now there'll be tadpoles galore!

Can you work out what our #trainees are spelling? During the #amphibian #breeding #season, #BoardwalksNatureReserve is an excellent spot to find #CommonToads. Remember to log your sightings on our free Dragon Finder app: https://t.co/6rd7K3igCs

Spent a lovely evening with #FriendsofAngusHerpetofauna surveying #gullypots for #amphibians With the lack of rain there hasn’t been as much activity but we still rescued two #commontoads and four #palmatenewts @ARC_Bytes #conservation #volunteer 🐸 🐸

We're sorry to have traumatised the nation by raising awareness of #toadfly on #Springwatch tonight. If you see dead or diseased #commontoads (or any wildlife) please report to: https://t.co/vMivSmfH4N

It's the breeding season for #CommonToads now at the @GreatFen. Today, I had to assist the road crossing of a pair of these amorous #amphibians; the male was on top, and holding on tightly! Hopefully he and the female will be making good use of the new #ponds we have created.

One of the most recent interpretation boards that has been installed is in #CressinghamGardens in #Lambeth, and has been positioned in a significant place where #CommonToads #migrate to get to a local park’s #pond. #ThanksToAll @HeritageFundUK @HeritageFundL_S

The @HeritageFundUK @HeritageFundL_S funded #LondonTOAD project not only thinks that #CommonToads are one of our #HeritageTreasures, but all of the valuable green spaces you find across #London too! Spaces just like @TCVtweets Lavender Pond LNR in Southwark (pictured).
