The problem with acetaminophen links to autism is the toxin released when the liver metabolizes it. But there is a problem too with some of the studies. Well over a dozen observational studies report plausible biological ties between prenatal/infant acetaminophen exposure and later neurodevelopmental problems.
When the liver metabolizes acetaminophen (Tylenol), a small portion (about 5–10%) is metabolized into a toxic compound called N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine.
NAPQI binds to liver protein and depletes the antioxidant glutathione, triggering oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage in cells. Oxidative stress during critical windows of brain development can alter neural cells and circuits.
