Still time to register (https://t.co/Pvb2l9AtoL) for the Complex Litigation Ethics Conference @ UC Law SF. I will join Myriam Gilles (Cardozo Law School), Brooke Hodge (Eisner Amper) & Judge W. Smith to discuss diversity in attorneys appointed to lead the nation’s largest cases.

1. This has been raised & rejected before. But it’s important to keep on the radar as cities become big players in complex litigation. Big cities, like Chicago, have beefed up their own law departments for such cases. But small ones depend on private counsel. #ComplexLitTwitter
A federal judge in Chicago is poised to decide if the city's decision to hire a large contingency fee law firm for a lawsuit against DoorDash violates the company's due process rights @DaveThomas5150 https://t.co/MNGs5v6xlo

Interested in today's #purduepharma grant and what's at stake before the Supreme Court? My piece about non-debtors (like the Sacklers) latching onto ch. 11 is a good place to start understanding the issue. https://t.co/0bphlOR4n8
💯agree. Information on courts and lawsuits should be free. Transparency matters.
And yes, we should pay lawyers for taking up the fight to make more information free to the public.

@elizabethcburch @deepakguptalaw @motleyrice @FreeLawProject Class Counsel is seeking 20% of the $125m fund. This is a rare instance where the fees sought are actually low. No one else wanted to bring this case and it was a total dog fight resulting in a great cash settlement and the elimination of PACER fees.
Pacer users: a notice about the impending class settlement. Kudos to @deepakguptalaw & @motleyrice for negotiating a deal without claims forms & hurdles to jump through to recover compensation.

1. Coming to @TexasLRev, @davidlnoll and I take a deep dive into how courts appoint lawyers to lead some of the largest litigations in the US, the most-frequently chosen among them, and the extent to which courts adopted reforms to diversify their ranks. https://t.co/N5gfr4iFrK

Courts should always look behind the sticker price of the settlement fund and to the actual claims rate and value added to class members before awarding #attorneysfees.
Kudos to the 9th Cir for seeing through the mud.

The lawyers then asked the court to award them $6 million in legal fees. And the court authorized $1.7 million in legal fees—more than thirty times the amount that the class received."
2. This is small part of a much larger study and project that aims to track, measure, and conceptualize what MDL litigation means for public and private law. So comments welcome. #ComplexLitTwitter
