New Action Campaign: Have you noticed how a UN-commissioned finding of genocide turned into a claim? This was Sky News's headline on Monday night: "UN report claims Israel 'genocide' in Gaza has continued after ceasefire" The UN commission of inquiry made no claim. It investigated cases, applied the law and reported its findings to the General Assembly: - Israel is still committing genocide in Gaza. It has murdered 1,431 people after the 'ceasefire', at least 300 of them children. - In the occupied West Bank, Israel committed crimes against humanity, extermination, torture, rape and persecution. It has murdered 254 Palestinians since October 2023. - Israel answered neither of the commission's two requests for information. Then the media got to work. We counted every word of 15 "news" reports: - Israel's denial got 1,178 words. Palestinians got 46, all from one diplomat defending the Palestinian Authority. Not one report quoted a Palestinian about what Israel did. - Haaretz, an Israeli paper, gave the findings more words than any of the 15: 840, or 84% of its report. Sky gave them 407 (58%), The New York Times 532 (61%), Reuters 319 and The Independent 312. - Sky wrote "claims" or "alleges" about the findings nine times, even about the UN's own death toll. In Sky's report Palestinians "died", while Israelis "were killed" in a "terror attack" it called "the atrocity". - Sky gave 21% of its report to Israel's denial and to doubts about the commission. No outlet outside Israel gave them more. - Reuters never told its readers that the commission found crimes against humanity. CBC ran the same copy. - Not one report said Israel had refused to answer the commission. Today is not an ordinary day. Today marks the anniversary of the loss of my son, Rakan. My little boy, who came into this world after five years of waiting, lived for only nine months, and then was taken from us in a single moment under the bombardment. On October 9, 2023, at around 2 a.m., I returned from my work as a journalist through the fire and destruction, only to find that my family was buried beneath the rubble… and Rakan was among them. I cannot describe what it feels like for a father to search through the rubble for his child, or how a heart can accept that the little face that once filled our home with life will never come back. Three years have passed… and I still find myself looking for him in the details of my life. In my children’s laughter, in children’s toys, and every time I hold a child in my arms. I once thought time would make the pain easier. Instead, it has only taught me how to carry it. And today, as I hold Yaman in my arms, I feel that Rakan is still with me in another way. Yaman is not a replacement for him, and he never could be. Every child has a place in their father’s heart, and Rakan has a place that no one can ever take. Rakan… You were only nine months of my life, but you left behind a lifetime in my heart. You left this world so young, but your memory grows with me every day. May God have mercy on my son Rakan and make him among the birds of Paradise. May He reunite me with him one day, in a place with no bombardment, no fear, and no separation.
