After Danielle Smith’s announcements last week, conversations with my two teenagers arose. At one point, my daughter said that she would never choose to take hormones or to have gender changing surgeries. She thought no one should put their bodies through that. My response was that everyone needs to be able to make the choices that they want for their lives. No one should have the right to demand that others make the same choices as their own. I further explained to her that Danielle Smith’s attempt to make policies against scientific experts and medical experts will damage the care that many youth are needing. Danielle may be stating that she is looking out for the wellbeing of Alberta’s youth, but making decisions without significant research, shows that her real motivation is to seek political approval from her caucus as well as her supporters. Making decisions for her own gain, will hurt others. Decisions concerning health should be made by patients with the help of their doctors and specialists. Politicians have no right to intervene.
