On the first day I asked students “what part of your identity do you pull from when you’re writing?” They shared so much about themselves, what’s important to them, & what parts of their identities/experiences are ever present when they write/think #ContextBeforeContent #HipHopEd

FYI, Comfortable classroom contexts are important for teachers too. Find a wall space in your classroom and share your life/story/passions. Family photos, diplomas, vacation pics, awards. BE HUMAN #ContextBeforeContent #HipHopEd

Add a little something something to that index card where you ask for name and parents phone number. Ask Whats your favorite song? favorite meal. favorite movie then reference the info randomly during the year as you teach #ContextBeforeContent #HipHopEd
