Exertional heat stroke is one of three leading causes of death in high school sports in the U.S., according to the CEO of @K_S_Institute.
Amid record-setting high temperatures, one New Jersey high school says preventing the heat illness is a top priority.

National recommendations call for cooling heat stroke patients before transporting them to the hospital, but as @DavidSchechter found out, only 11 states require ambulance services to follow this life-saving protocol.

As you're updating your Heat Illness P&P this summer, we recommend having a poleless litter available for cold water immersion. These devices assist in the placement/removal from cold water immersion tubs. We recommend ones with patient retention straps.

In the meantime, if you suspect an EHS, we recommend using a device such as a Welch Allyn & their rectal adapter. This adapter can be used to assess rectal temp to diagnose EHS, then be removed before placing patient in an immersion tub for treatment.
