We served just under 500 meals tonight, and it was packed. Despite the rain and the cold, the numbers were overwhelming. We are only into 2026, and already the amount of children down there tonight was very apparent. The amount of elderly that are there, whom we see passing by every week, as usual. As always, we prioritised families with children first, packing as much as we possibly could for them. We then moved quickly to support the elderly, followed by rough sleepers. A huge number of tents were given out, along with hats, gloves, and scarves to help people get through the cold. We are only in the second week of January, and somehow, some way, we already know this is not getting any better. It truly isn’t. We shudder to think what will happen if soup runs are taken off the streets. What will happen to these people? We know that this year will bring new by-laws affecting soup runs, and that is certain. It’s frightening to think about what may be around the next corner for those who rely on this support. That being said, we want to give a huge shout-out to our incredible volunteers. We are heading into our 10th year. It is shameful that we are still outside the GPO, feeding people, a decade on. We never imagined we would still be here 10 years later. We started in February 2016, and we will soon complete our 10th year and begin our 11th. A decade later, the need is still there. We hope this year brings change. We hope for a brighter future for everyone, and for an end to poverty in our country — though we are not holding our breath.
