Our #CritterOfTheWeek is the Couch’s Spadefoot Toad!
Named for the spade-shaped projection on each of its back feet to dig into the soil, the Couch’s Spadefoot grows up to 3��� in length & comes in a range of colors from greenish-yellow to brown.
Our #CritterOfTheWeek is the Common Cactus Dodger!
This cicada is commonly found on cholla & prickly pear cactuses in arid scrub areas. Mostly black with small amounts of white & beige, this small singer uses the same mechanism as other cicadas to find romance- the tymbal organ.

Our #CritterOfTheWeek is the Mule Deer!
While many of our fellow Burquenos were eager to find out if Santa & his reindeer had visited them overnight, those are the only reindeer that grace the Duke City. We do, however, have their cousins as some of our wild citizens—Mule Deer!
Our #CritterOfTheWeek is the Cackling Goose!
Cackling Geese are the smaller and stubbier cousins of one of our other geese species—the Canada Goose. Cackling Geese are much smaller in size (~24” instead of ~30-40” in length) with a much shorter neck and bill.
Our #CritterOfTheWeek is the White-winged Dove!
This dove is closely related to Turtle Dove and resembles their threatened European cousins. The White-winged Dove is named for their distinctive bright white bottom edge along their wings, making them easy to spot all over ABQ.
Our #CritterOfTheWeek is the Gambel’s Quail!
This quail species can be found throughout ABQ, most commonly in the open grassland areas of the West Mesa & Foothills. You have to be a bit patient, as they will spook and run away easily. Remember to enjoy wildlife from a distance!

This iconic bird, likely to be found on many dinner tables this week (well, their domesticated cousins, anyway), has been a piece of North American history for thousands of years.

Our #CritterOfTheWeek is the Powdered Dancer!
This critter gets its name from the powdery white coloring of mature males that adorns their whole body. Females can have either brown or blue forms, where the head and thorax are either a tan or turquoise blue color.

Common in calm pools above the high tide line, #HawaiianZebraBlenny (#pāoʻo) swim with lateral undulations like little eels. With the same motion, they may wriggle almost out of the water to bask in the sun.

Our not-actually-spooky #CritterOfTheWeek is the Great-tailed Grackle!
Almost the size of a crow, the Great-tailed Grackle gets its name from its long, V-shaped tail that takes up nearly half its 15-18” length. The birds are excellent at looking angry but are not aggressive.
