Last night I was on @LBC #CrossQuestions talking about issues mostly related to Andy Burnham's speech yesterday. The big takeaway for me is that he's saying largely the same stuff the last five Prime Ministers have all said (albeit with more charm than Starmer) without presenting any kind of real change or idea of how he plans to deliver these things, where successive Prime Ministers have consistently failed.
Local Government - my day job - is indicative of the problem. A fundamentally flawed and unsustainable system that will not be solved unless a government is prepared to rip up the rules book and do it fundamentally differently. I heard nothing yesterday to tell me that Burnham has the first idea how to tackle this stuff.
If his 'big plan' is a government office in the north and 'build more houses' well, bluntly, that's the same plan as the last guy and the guy before that. I can assure you that putting a Treasury office in Darlington has not changed the fabric of how our country is run.
People have had more than enough of warm words and no action. Even his focus on devolution - passing powers to a local level - requires a clear sense of purpose and a clear plan, or you just get more cost and more bureaucracy. Not convinced!
