On this day in 1801, Robert Patterson sent a letter to Thomas Jefferson, claiming he had invented the ‘perfect cypher’.
His letter wasn’t decrypted until 200 years later, in 2007!

On 23rd November 1866, the first encoded American diplomatic telegram was sent, by Secretary of State William Seward.
The original message was of 780 words, which when encoded, grew to 1,237 number groups, with an additional 88 code symbols spelled out.
