#FrescoFriday takes us to the House of the #Cryptoporticus in #Pompeii, or rather to this #fresco from the House's #œcus, now in the Antiquarium. From 40-30 BCE, this is a sophisticated decoration with garlands and a #herm, and two pictures with illusionistic shutters above.

#FrescoFriday in the #DomusAurea of #Nero takes us into the immense #cryptoporticus, which is divided by this bridge. It carried water down into the central bay of the great Octagonal Hall, and its #fresco decoration is a delicate series of #frames and nautical motifs.

#SpoliaSunday brings us to the #Palatine in #Rome, to the decidedly wonky patchwork repairs to a wall of the #cryptoporticus in the #DomusTiberiana. The #Palatium, the group of imperial residences, maintained a symbolic importance even into the C10, with the Ottonian emperors.

#FrescoFriday brings us back to the #cryptoporticus of the #DomusAurea, to appreciate the delicate artistry of #Nero's painters. This painted decoration is alnost unique in #Rome - this part of the Domus consists of ahout 150 rooms of a #JulioClaudian palace. A magical place.

For #ReliefWednesday we're looking up at a fragment of the #stucco #ceiling of the #cryptoporticus of #Nero, of a level of detail that defeats my camera's zoom capacity but which is both stately and graceful even without its original #polychromy. Imperial #Rome showing its best.

#MosaicMonday A famous set of mosaics depicting a series of #gladiator fights, thought to have decorated a #cryptoporticus of a large #domus from the 4th century. Unearthed in 1834 on the Borghese estate at Torrenova and later installed in the Salone of the Galleria Borghese.

#FrescoFriday from one of my favorite places in #Pompeii, the House of the #Cryptoporticus. We are looking at a #lararium; #Mercury is looking at you. The household gods have been gone for a long time, but thankfully, we can still see what remains of their home.
