1. Iran war & the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has affected global oil supply & resulted in an LPG ‘crisis’ in India. #CutThe Clutter, with my colleague Udit Bubna, looks at India’s imports of LPG & LNG, how much we consume & measures undertaken by the Modi govt to address the concerns. 2. A large share of the world’s hydrocarbons — & a significant chunk of India’s gas imports — passes through the Strait of Hormuz. The tankers bring gas, which is liquified under pressure. So, they need to dock at specialised terminals. India only has a handful of such terminals & the major ones include Dahej, Hazira, Kochi, Dhamra, Ennore LNG Terminal. 3. India consumes about 189 million metric standard cubic meters of natural gas daily. Of this, 97.5 MMSCMD is produced domestically & 91.5 MMSCMD is imported. About 54% of what’s imported is currently under ‘force majeure’— a contract clause triggered by events beyond control (war, disasters). In India, Petronet LNG & GAIL have also issued various levels of ‘force majeure’ & that’s caused some panic. 4. India is the second largest consumer of LPG after China, using about 31 mn tons every year. We produce 40-45% domestically & about 55-60% is imported. Of the imports, 80-90% pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Usually, India sees about 55-60 lakh cylinder booking a day. This has now gone up to 75-80 lakh cylinders. If you use PNG at home, you’re relatively safe. 5. The prominent countries from where India imports crude oil are Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, UAE & all the Middle Eastern countries. Apart from that, we also import from the US, South Americas & Africas. That’s where the diversification has happened now — increasing countries from 27 to 40. 6. In February, India imported around 1.06 mn barrels/day from Russia, almost 1 mn barrels/day from Saudi Arabia & Iraq each. Now the Hormuz blockade affects the Middle East imports. So, what we’ve seen in just the first 10 days of March is a rise in imports from Russia — 1.59 mn barrels/day already. 7.
