#Phoresy and #hyperphoresy in mites of the #Histiostomatidae (#Astigmata, #Acariformes) with #fungalspores.
#Mites of the Astigmata, especially the Histiostomatidae, can transport fungal spores. These adhere either in #cuticle folds or simply to the surface of the mite's body, as this surface is sticky due to non-volatile portions of secretions on the hind body (#hysterosoma). Since Astigmata (with a few exceptions) spread phoretically, i.e. use larger arthropods to spread, their transport of spores should be described as hyperphoresy, if there is a strategy associated with it. Histiostomatidae #feed on self-introduced #fungi. According to my observation, their growth is controlled by fungicides produced by the mite.
Stunted fungal areas that are in the process of beginning to decompose and are therefore also covered by #bacteria represent the #foodsource for the mites. This hyperphoretic strategy has been demonstrated somewhat better for histiostomatid species (forming a clade) associated with bark beetles (e.g. some papers S. F. Wirth), but has not yet been thoroughly researched. I have evidence that this form of hyperphoresy also occurs in species from other clades of Histiostomatidae.
The distribution stage of the mites in Astigmata in general is a particularly modified juvenile stage, the #deutonymph. Fungal spores that it transports in Histiostomatidae are spread hyperphoretically.
However, my #SEM #photos show an #adultfemale mite of the #species #Histiostomapiceae associated with bark beetles Ips typographus and I. cembrae. Adults can also transport fungal spores within the boundaries of their #habitat (bark beetle galleries). The dorsal area of the hysterosoma and parts of the front body can be seen in two different zooms (front body = proterosoma at bottom of the images). Two roundish fungal spores can be clearly recognized on the anterior hysterosoma. It has not yet been researched whether fungal spores transported by adult mites is part of a life strategy within their #ephemeral habitat (here the bark beetle substrate) or whether it is just a more or less meaningless coincidence. #evolution #acarology #phoresis
