#Cyclopia: One of the Rarest and Most Devastating Fetal Malformations 🧬 This isn’t science fiction. This isn’t CGI. This is a real congenital condition called cyclopia, identified through prenatal imaging and confirmed after delivery. Cyclopia is an extremely rare and lethal developmental disorder resulting from holoprosencephaly, a failure of the embryonic brain to divide into two hemispheres. When this separation does not occur, the facial structures also fail to form normally. This can lead to a single midline eye area, fused orbits, and sometimes a proboscis — a small trunk-like structure located above where the nose would normally be. Prenatal ultrasound may show: •a single centrally located orbital cavity •absence of normal nasal structures •a protruding proboscis •significant distortion of typical facial anatomy Fetal MRI confirms the diagnosis by demonstrating the brain’s failure to separate into left and right hemispheres — the key feature of holoprosencephaly. Babies with cyclopia are unfortunately not compatible with life. Most pass away before birth, and those born alive typically survive only minutes to hours.
