Really great day out at Roehampton Uni, some super engaged students having a go at building a #dappInADay and proud to say may of them achieved this milestone and more. Huge props to @libertant for arranging the day and setting the scene with a fantastic intro to Web3 and what building with Scrypto on Radix can unlock.
Thank you @RoehamptonUni! 💙
Our #DappInADay workshop yesterday was a real breakthrough. Only 3-4 of the students had even heard of Web3 beforehand, yet within an hour nearly everyone was using the Radix Engine Simulator (resim). After 9(!) events, it feels like we have finally ironed out the installation bugs that were a significant barrier to getting started on Radix. This was the first event where even very junior developers were asking "Where can I take this?" and "Is there a community I can join?", having seen the potential to build a Web3 startup. Far fewer attendees left during the installation phase and it was generally much less stressful, which freed up time to answer more questions and dive into Radix fundamentals. Even without a senior engineer present, at least two people deployed live applications to testnet. We were actually very close to #DappInaHalfDay!
A huge thanks to @a_vaunt @ShardSpaceApp for taking a day off to attend the event. Beyond squashing bugs, he gave an overview of the 4(!) applications he's built and shared insights into what's possible to build on Radix, making the potential career path very tangible on what was the first day of Roehampton’s Career Development Week.
We're already planning the next batch of workshops so if you're interested in bringing #DAppInADay to your university or organization, please get in touch! The community is growing, and we'd love to help more builders discover what's possible on Radix. 🚀

Gm! A belated debrief on last week’s 5th #DAppInADay workshop @YourStMarys University. As always, the staff and facilities at St Mary’s were amazing. We are immensely grateful to Prins, Gordon, Laura and the rest of the team for hosting us and doing everything with alacrity and enthusiasm. The workshop itself was very mixed: only 11 students were there and nobody deployed to testnet but ironically part of the reason for the low turnout is that most of the Level 5 students were away working on their Level 5 projects… building on Radix! 6 teams of students are building Radix dApps and will present their results in May. We have also been asked to be a part of the advanced CS topics module in September. A huge thanks to the @ShardSpaceApp team for their tech support during the event and ongoing help for the student projects.
Unfortunately for these kinds of workshops, St Mary’s is a long way outside London and only has 150 CS students so it has always been the least well attended. We also had some installation problems again. It feels like it should be an easy fix but with the best will in the world, if new devs can’t install the CLI then they’re falling at the first hurdle. The Radixdlt docs/devdocs/academy/learn urgently needs untangling and there aren't any YouTube videos walking new devs through building a simple application. The basics are missing and we don’t know how many potential builders we’re losing because of it.
Despite these hiccups, one couple got up at 4am and came from Birmingham to be at the workshop. Apparently there are lots of hackathons but almost no Web3 workshops so they found us on Eventbrite. This makes us think that we could actually run them as paid events, rather than relying on Foundation funding going forward. As for the workshop itself, everyone is SUPER excited by Intents. We could see their heads exploding as it was explained to them; especially the Masters students.
As ever, our conviction that Radix is the future of Web3 is undimmed, but there’s work to do to get its product into the hands of its primary customers: builders.

The future leaders of Radix are building now.

What a week so far!
Following on from our #DAppInADay workshop on the 4th, Zi from @radixdlt was invited back to the beautiful @RoehamptonUni campus on Monday to talk to ~25 final year students about his journey to becoming a software developer, Web3, and Radix; followed by an introduction to the wallet and sending transactions.
Yesterday, we were invited to the Business, Innovation, and Growth Summit in Croydon, hosted by @BIGSouthLondon, to discuss rolling out the workshops to @LSBU, @KingstonUni, and a number of other universities and colleges in South London. 🚀
And finally, we've shipped an article about Stage 1 of the workshops and a glimpse into our vision for their future:

Anything we missed?🤔 $XRD 📈

There's a huge demand for these #DAppInADay Web3 workshops for students.
@lucmatheson could @coinbase help us blitzscale them?
Another level from the Radix hackathon @YourStMarys. Smashed our Zero-to-Stokenet pb, made a bunch of on-ledger dogs, tokenized some real estate, paid in $MooTron, and we might even have a few alumni who are ready to help the next cohort. 🔥
Next stop, @RoehamptonUni on Monday! 🏁
#DAppInADay

A few thoughts on the #DAppInADay workshops so far:
1. Non-crypto-natives. @beemdvp called this early on but the attendees had far less Web3 experience than we were expecting. Spending all day on Crypto Twitter and running a few events had given us the assumption that by the time students get to university, they would be pretty much crypto native, but this wasn’t the case at all. Neither cohort at Westminster or St Mary’s had really encountered Web3 before so we had to completely recalibrate our approach. On balance, this is enormously positive, but first the downsides:
2. Complexity of Web3. The scale of the task of onboarding GenZ is daunting; there’s a huge amount to explain. Bitcoin has done some of the conceptual heavy lifting, making the idea of a decentralized payment network more mainstream, but crypto is composed of multiple layers, each requiring analogies and justifications to understand. Ethereum is a kind of open-source Venmo, and Radix is a kind of operating system, but their existence is predicated on a deep philosophical foundation of Austrian economics, anti-authoritarianism, and censorship resistance, which aren’t easy answers to “Well, why do we need it?”
3. Philosophical underpinnings. A related point is that, like it or not, all crypto networks are Trojan horses for extinction-level political and economic events. It is hard not to be cognizant of this when talking to young people who perhaps haven’t decided where their philosophical loyalties lie. It’s a question that doesn’t arise during crypto-native events as most attendees will have already bought into the new paradigm, but at entry level workshops like these, it’s one that requires more thought.
4. Junior devs. Regarding coding experience, we were surprised to learn during the workshops that despite - or perhaps because of - recent technological advances, the average Computer Science student’s first experience of coding is around 17 years old, compared to ~12-13 a few decades earlier. This made the learning curve much steeper than we expected. In future, we could perhaps target more senior students, but that would have to be balanced against the following points; the positives:
5. Clean slates. It can be difficult to learn a new way of working, even if it is better, but it is ten times more difficult if one is economically and emotionally invested in the status quo. Therefore, what the students lacked in Web3 experience, they made up for by being unencumbered by bad practices or - even worse - EVM bags. For example, we didn’t have to waste time justifying the $XRD price, or explaining why defining assets on smart contracts is a bad idea, we simply taught from an asset-oriented perspective and they picked it up very quickly. In this way, early workshops like these are not only conceptually simple, they also serve as vaccinations against the poor architectures of other networks.
6. Fun factor. Notwithstanding crypto’s revolutionary financial and political nature, being able to introduce Radix to an audience with almost no preconceptions proved that on its own merits, Radix is a cool, fun, and transformative technology. It can’t be underestimated just how amazing it is to follow a short tutorial and suddenly have your own NFT collection on your phone that you can send to your friends. For most people, things like this are what will drive mainstream adoption and Radix makes them super easy to implement.
7. Best ROI. Our thesis is that developers are the primary customers of distributed ledgers but these workshops elevate to zealotry our opinion that there is no better ROI than taking a student from zero-to-testnet in a few hours. In one metric, we have someone who is both a user and a developer, understands the value proposition of Radix, and has a Web3 onboarding experience that will be difficult to beat.
Hope to add more after Roehampton tomorrow!
