A recent study conducted by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory has revealed adverse health effects associated with LED lighting, particularly LED-lit displays found on smartphones.
The research indicates that Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) dimming, a common technique used in LED lights and displays, can cause health issues comparable to those caused by older fluorescent lights.
Despite claims made by companies such as Samsung, Google, and Apple regarding their displays being "flicker-free," the study suggests that visible strobing represents only one aspect of the problem.
The research team, led by lighting expert Naomi Miller, has discovered that the phantom array effect, observed when the eyes traverse a fluctuating light source, offers a more precise gauge of flicker sensitivity.
The study, encompassing individuals with and without migraines, revealed that migraine-prone participants experienced headaches, visual fatigue, and disorientation during the assessment. Non-migraine sufferers also reported symptoms, albeit to a lesser degree.
These findings underscore the imperative for manufacturers to heed such studies, particularly as LED lighting proliferates.
Alternative brands, such as OnePlus, Honor, Xiaomi Vivo, Oppo, and others, have already adopted DC dimming or high PWM rates to mitigate potential health risks. In contrast, Samsung, Google, and Apple continue to prioritize other metrics over long-term human health considerations.
