The @DEAHQ War On Chronic Pain Patients 😔

One of the greatest public health failures in modern American history was forcing millions of chronic pain patients into unnecessary suffering.
The treatment existed. Relief existed. In many cases, all it took was a doctor’s prescription. What stood in the way wasn’t medicine. It was the DEA, the CDC, politicians, and addiction activists creating policies for patients they never treated and conditions they never lived with.
Since 2016, millions suffering from spinal injuries, CRPS, autoimmune diseases, cancer, and other debilitating conditions have watched their quality of life disappear. People lost careers, mobility, independence, and dignity.
I know because I lived it.
After my injury in 2011, I spent most of my life in bed. I wasn’t living. I was existing. Every day revolved around pain. Every night was back spasms and sleeplessness.
Then I finally asked for help.
My doctor prescribed pain medication, and my life changed. I started exercising again, hiking again, socializing again, and sleeping through the night. Things most people take for granted suddenly became possible again.
Then came the war on pain patients.
Law abiding Americans were treated like criminals. Patients who followed every rule found themselves under suspicion. Doctors became terrified of regulators. Many stopped prescribing, not because patients didn’t need treatment, but because the DEA made the consequences too dangerous.
The worst part is that these policies failed.
They didn’t stop addiction.
They didn’t stop overdoses.
They didn’t solve the opioid crisis.
What they did do was create a massive black market.
Years ago, people buying diverted prescription opioids generally knew what they were getting: a pharmaceutical product manufactured under quality controls. Today, many are buying counterfeit pills made in illegal labs with unknown ingredients and unknown potency.
You can help someone seek treatment.
You can help someone recover.
But you can’t help a corpse.
These policies didn’t just hurt chronic pain patients. They also made drug use far more dangerous for people already struggling with addiction. As prescription opioids became harder to obtain, illicit fentanyl flooded the streets.
Many chronic pain patients were driven to the black market. Others were left to suffer in agony. Some lost hope entirely.
That should never have happened.
The DEA’s campaign against doctors did not fix the opioid crisis. It did not eliminate addiction. It did not stop overdose deaths.
What it accomplished was making life harder for the people who were already suffering the most.
That failure deserves to be remembered.
