#Decomposing #fruits, under suitable conditions, represent #speciesrich #microhabitats. They must be described as #ephemeral #biochoria, as they are only temporarily available depending on temperature and humidity, namely until they have completely decomposed and become #humus or #soil.
These #ecological #conditions have led via evolution to various #lifestrategies in the organisms that depend on them. These include #phoresy (#phoresis) and #hyperphoresy: more vulnerable and less mobile species are #dispersed by other, stronger and more mobile species, similar to a #taxiride from a dying habitat to a new, fresh one. #Mites and #nematodes frequently employ this #strategy.
For example, in my last poster publication S.F. Wirth ( 2024), I highlighted the #role of mites of the #Histiostomatidae (#Astigmata) in the #decomposition of #lemons in Italy. I assume that the ecological significance of Histiostomatidae mites also lies in the fact that most taxa probably feed on a mixture of decaying #fungi and #bacteria. These fungi, which belong to the primary #decomposers of the ephemeral habitats, are introduced by the mites (phoretic dispersal stage: deutonymph, but also adults can carry spores within the limited range of their ephemeral habitats) in the form of #spores that adhere to their backs (#hyperphoresis).
Each mite species does not necessarily carry spores from only one fungal species. Nevertheless, some spore species or taxa appear to occur preferentially and regularly, suggesting a #strategy.
Determining which bacteria and fungi, arthropods, insects, mites, and nematodes might be present in which fallen fruit is a complex and time-consuming task. D. Hoefle et al. (2025) pursued an approach in this direction in their paper. Using #ampliconsequencing, they identified #bacterial species and investigated the impact of decomposing fruit on #soilbiodiversity and its longer-term effects, for example, on young seedlings.
