UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE: Started off being very charmed, even with its influences very in your face. Was surprised by how emotionally hooked I ended up, weaving those influences into something bittersweet about homes made and returned to, and family lost and gained #DFF47
A lot to mull over with this, and honestly makes me want to rewatch all of the Jia that I’ve seen. But purely surface level, thought the rhythms of his editing and the musicality of the action entrancing to watch. His whole project is one of the best of contemporary cinema #DFF47
CAUGHT BY THE TIDES: Matches the editing together of old (and unused) footage with musical cuts that makes this feel like a sampled and stitched remix of everything Jia has been portraying re: modernity, isolation, time/culture’s inevitable march onward. Quite stunning #DFF47

On a personal note, I married into a large family with holiday gatherings like this but also changing as everyone grows older. Don’t think I’ve seen a film that quite captures the texture of these types of gatherings, and how they are haunted by years past #DFF47
CHRISTMAS EVE IN MILLER’S POINT: Overflowing with details both set and character based, this feels so alive to this specific milieu of family holiday time. Captures the humor and melancholy in equal nature, and how memory of the past tightens as time passes on #DFF47

I think Potrykus remains one of the most unique and singular voices working in American film today. The way his work looks, feels, and unspools is not really like anything else, and captures such a specificity that I find enthralling #DFF47
