But Berbera was only the opening act. The real prize is Zeila (Saylac). If Ethiopia gains access there, Djibouti’s lifeline will be cut. The ports that sustain Djibouti’s economy — and give it leverage in world politics — will collapse. The Clear and Present Danger: Let’s call it what it is: North Western Somalia “Somaliland” is an Emirati-Isaaq proxy, being used to surround and isolate Djibouti by land, air, and sea. Recognition of this breakaway territory would unleash three devastating blows Djibouti cannot survive: 1.Strategic Suicide Djibouti’s security has always rested on solidarity with Somalia. Recognition of North Western Somalia “Somaliland” shatters that bond and leaves Djibouti alone against Ethiopia, the UAE, and their allies. From that moment, Djibouti becomes expendable. 2.Economic Collapse Djibouti lives off Ethiopia’s dependence. Every year, $2–3 billion flows into Djibouti’s economy from port services. If North Western Somalia “Somaliland” is recognised, Ethiopia will shift its trade routes to Berbera or Zeila. Djibouti will be economically gutted — its ports reduced to empty docks. 3.Permanent Instability A recognised North Western Somalia “Somaliland” would serve as a permanent pressure point against Djibouti. Ethiopia and the UAE would use it to destabilise Djibouti at will. What begins as an economic loss ends as political encirclement and national collapse. The Reality Djibouti Must Accept: Recognition of North Western Somalia “Somaliland” is not “complicated diplomacy.” It is a direct existential assault on Djibouti’s sovereignty, economy, and survival. To even entertain the idea is madness. To allow it would be suicide. Djibouti must treat recognition of North Western Somalia “Somaliland” as a declaration of war on its very existence. It cannot afford neutrality, silence, or complacency. It must confront and crush this threat, politically and regionally, before it metastasises into an irreversible disaster.
