The corruption between gold miners and gas station owners in #Gambella has reached an alarming level, and it involves some government officials. Petroleum fuel is being hidden and illegally sold to gold miners in the region for about 420 birr per liter, while in #Dimma Woreda it exceeds 500 birr per liter.
This situation is making it nearly impossible for basic transportation and farmers to purchase fuel and prepare their farms for the upcoming farming season. If farmers are unable to cultivate their land, we can expect a severe food shortage, which will further worsen the already rising inflation.
I urge the Gambella regional government to address this corruption as soon as possible before the farming season begins. Gold mining is not seasonal and should not be prioritized over farming.

A bus was ambushed by the #South_Sudanese criminals this morning between #Dimma and #Pignudo killing five civilians including the driver and wounding another five. There was only one militia member in the bus who faced the criminals and neutralized one.
I learned that this hero was one of the many heroes who fought and survived the #Badme war. Without him, every single civilian in the bus would have been killed by those heartless criminals. I hope the government of #Gambella will recognize him for his heroic actions.
My heart goes to the families of the victims, and I wish a speedy recovery for those who were wounded.

I applaud the leadership of #Dimma district for taking such actions! Just any human being with common sense would know that this is not an investment, but a terrible destruction to the environment and communities in the area. It is a grave violation of human rights and a threat to the ecosystem. We demand a follow up investigation on the impacts that these chemical wastes have caused on the communities downstream and around.
The destruction of the environment will certainly affect the livelihoods of the future generations. I hope that the current leadership of #Gambella will evaluate or reexamine the mining activities in the region, and come up with solutions and preventative measures to protect civilians and the environment from such destructions and pollution.
Armed forces/criminals from #South_Sudan crossed to #Ethiopia through #Dimma district today, and they were welcomed and escorted back by the local militia. Two of them didn’t make it back to South Sudan! #Gambella is not a playground anymore, be careful! If you step foot in the area for criminal activities, you will be very lucky to make it back outside.
