@NNesvaderani @allergyPhD All you have to do is check out some #Displace18 and #Distribute2020 content to know how rad this conference can be. Doing things ~virtually~ before it was cool/necessary.
Iโm not cool enough or interesting enough or available enough to submit anything to this conference but (at least the #Displace18 and #Distribute2020 iterations) were fire. Highly recommend folks conjure up a panel with friends and apply. I will spectate and cheer you on ๐๐ผ
ICYMI the new @CulAnthโ@SocietyVisAnth joint conference portal is officially launched!

We're visiting @theAAG from anthro land today to talk about #displace18 and #distribute2020 which @culanth and @SocietyVisAnth put on as virtual alternatives to physical meetings: their stakes especially for decolonizing the academy and multimodal experiments. Join us if you can!
@DDDrewDaniel Ha when I was on staff for #Displace18, really the first academic conference to go all-online, I made a joke about not being able to set up virtual hotel bar afterparties. Like, the reason a lot of ppl go. ๐
Iโve been thinking about the #Displace18 โMother AntiHeroโ panel + fieldworker-mother recently. Iโm so grateful for the chats Iโve been able to have with #AnthroTwitter moms & caregivers of late, & to others who donโt know how much they inspire me like @eyatesd and @bairdlet.
@hemanginigupta The bandwidth problem, a crucial question for virtual conferencing, especially for global South locales, as we learned with #displace18 in 2018! Here's a creative alternative, the "Small File Media Festival" coming this fall from Simon Fraser University.

More modestly, here's a recent @culanth post I wrote about how deliberate experiments with virtual and alternative conferencing like #distribute2020 or #displace18 can help us reimagine the conventional annual academic meeting. 11/

Sinjini Mukherjee discusses how we might further decenter and unsettle both the US and academic institutions as 'hubs' for engagement in future iterations of virtual conferences like #Displace18 and #Distribute2020.
@TechOfGospel Absolutely. @Hanelizqui talked about this in more detail and the lessons learned from #Displace18, as well as ways we need to continue to improve accessibility in future iterations of this conference.

Paul Christians now talking about the ways that colonialism, racism, and ableism etc. are baked in to our #tech - something the #Distribute2020 organizers wrestled with regularly over the past year, along with questions of language and translation.
Honestly, I didn't participate (or fully understand) #Displace18 - I didn't feel tech savvy enough to prepare a virtual presentation, and I felt like the main reason I go to conferences is to meet and interact with colleagues beyond just listening to their presentations.
How can deliberate experiments with virtual conferencing like the amazing #distribute2020 or #displace18 help us reimagine the conventional annual academic meeting? A recent @culanth post I wrote with carbon, access, equity in mind. #AcademicTwitter

Important distinction. #distribute2020 is an amazing model for a virtual conference. It's also been 2 years in the making and builds on #displace18 experiences. Other academic organizations have a lot of catching up to do.
A blast from the past, on the eve of #distribute2020. Oh, the tension we felt on the @culanth organizing crew that sleepless dawn... All you folks who made #displace18 such an amazing experience two years ago, here's your chance to tune in again from wherever you are.
The @culanth biennial is live! Stream begins in minutes, access via password in email, welcome to #displace18

We're all feeling the scholarly love and conviviality that's been fostered around virtual conferencing and the efforts to make this experiment work!

@AndreaMuehleba1 So many of us together got #displace18 going in 2018: @spinsterofutica @TechOfGospel @empireo @dtbyler @plainaffinity @fionapmcdonald @TZoanni @GabrielDattatre @arjshankar all the @culanth and @SocietyVisAnth and @WennerGrenOrg folks, and nodes including Toronto @AndreaMuehleba1!
Big opportunity to take IAG online. Then anyone can attend from anywhere. American Cultural Anthropologists ran their #Displace18 annual conference online in 2018 resulting in 4x attendance including large participation from global south. https://t.co/gHxU1lPEjX
@ArgentNeil Neil, if helpful, we simply postponed our SRI2020 Congress (June, Brisbane). Everything remains the same, except the date, so no need to redo abstracts, sessions, etc. It also gives time to ramp up virtual engagement for those who can't/won't travel.
Good luck with it all.
๐๐พ was the Conference Manager for the now-famous #Displace18 conference of the @culanth and @SocietyVisAnth.
Heck of a ride. ๐ซ

Academic conferences are going virtual. Such alternatives have an intriguing history. In this new post for @culanth I write about experiments with conference space and medium in anthropology, and how to design with these lessons in mind. #anthrotwitter

The old @culanth site has the #displace18 virtual conference toolkit, which includes posts on how to do voiceovers, record yourself, and create an accessible online presentation. All useful resources for teaching remotely: https://t.co/c3XiUZPMri
