(1/3) Our final #DJBattlefields22 visits were to the Passchendaele museum, where amongst other things we experienced recreated trenches and dugouts, and Tyne Cot, which is the largest @CWGC cemetery in the world. We laid wreaths at the names of some more of our Old Boys...
Our next visit was to Langemark, one of only four German cemeteries in the Flanders region. #DJBattlefields22
Today we're exploring some notable sights around the Ypres Salient, beginning with Essex Farm, where John McCrae wrote 'In Flanders Fields'. #DJBattlefields22
It's always a privilege to witness and take part in the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres. Our students behaved impeccably; an absolute credit to themselves as well as the school. #DJBattlefields22
Our final two sites on the Somme were Caterpillar Valley Cemetery and Delville Wood, both of which have graves of past students of the school. We've then travelled through to Ypres, ready for the Last Post at the Menin Gate this evening. #DJBattlefields22
We've visited Lochnagar Crater this afternoon; when the mine which created it was detonated on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, the explosion was said to have been heard in London. Even with 84 students, we couldn't stretch all the way around! #ZoomIn #DJBattlefields22
There are five former students or teachers of Durham Johnston remembered on the Thiepval memorial to the missing on the Somme. We laid a wreath in memory, and considered the sheer scale of the Battle of the Somme. #DJBattlefields22

It's a glorious morning in France, and we're making our way round the sights of the Somme, visiting Pozières cemetery to begin to understand the work of the @CWGC and then to the Devonshire Cemetery as we look at the events of 1st July 1916. #DJBattlefields22
It's been a busy few hours - a brief visit to the French national cemetery Notre Dame de Lorette, and then to Albert where we're spending the night. Tomorrow is packed full of lots of sights as we explore the Somme region. #DJBattlefields22
